The May 4th SOVO Grand Opening went extremely well. It is estimated that over 40 people present. Jim Willis, Director of the Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs (ODVA), was attended as well as Coos County Commissioners Nikki Whitty and John Griffith. Susan Aviotti, our local Vet Center Readjustment Counselor also stopped by for awhile. We had veteran representatives from all eras. Everyone was very impressed with the vision and direction of SOVO as well as with the physical office at the Pony Village Mall. After the Grand Opening we attended a presentation of the "Oregon Honor Service Medal" at the Egyptian Theater. It was well attended and went nicely also. A total of 62 veterans received the medal. Jim Willis was the keynote speaker. Jeff McKeown, Mayor of Coos Bay, thanked our local veterans for their service. Vic Diaz, Founder and President of SOVO, and Francis Rowan, our new Oregon State Vietnam Veterans of America President, made the presentations.
